Our first stop of our club series of the Ontario 4v4 Circuit start off with a bang! We had 18 teams compete including 5 who are long-standing club teams in the Circuit. It was spread across two different facilities due to impressive demand, which means these two rankings will merge once there is cross team competition in future events.
First up, big shout out to Nicolas Edwards from SGS, and Kevin Chao, David Lundy, Julia Peden, and Phil Turner of Shark Bait, who helped run the events as Alyne and Blue were isolating due to COVID. We heard from many that you are ROCKSTARS, and this event would not have run smoothly without these great people and longtime community members of the 4v4 Circuit. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Congratulations to Mighty Hucks who got top Spirit at the Ballsports location, and congratulations to YUM and Monsters who were the top Spirit at the Downsview location. Overall, the event had good average Spirit of the Game, and we’re glad to see everyone competing with good spirit in close matches.
As we always emphasize, every point matters, and close wins, big losses, and surprising upsets tell the story behind the final rankings.
Ballsports hosted 6 teams, with Melt and SGS returning as long-standing club teams in the Circuit, finishing 12th and 13th at the end of last season. SGS struggled to find their feet, with big losses to Melt and Funion, but pulled together for a respectable -4 loss to the eventual champions of the round robin. Melt had three (3!!!) universe point games Saturday, going 2-1 in those games, with a loss to Retirement Home, and wins over Diamond Dogs and Funion. Diamond Dogs confidently handled the rest of the competition and pulled away to the top of the ranking. Every team at this event had at least one universe point game, with Melt winning with three. I love 4v4. Keep grinding y’all.
Later that evening, we hosted 12 teams at Downsview Dome. YUM, top 4 from last season’s Circuit, Shark Bait (10th last year) and Monsters (rating ~600 last year) return to the Circuit.
YUM, tied as spirit champs, came out firing with dominant wins, a close +2 game over 4v4 experienced Shark Bait, and a close -2 loss against GETR DID. GETR DID had two universe point games, going 1-1, and trickled off for the day with two losses, -6 against Shark Bait and a universe point loss against Friends and Mikey. If you thought three universe point games was a lot, Spiderballers had four (4!!!), with 1-3 record. Talk about intensity. One of their losses was handed by y r u running, whose close win and dominant wins over their other competition helped pull their rating just 17 points below Spiderballers‘. Interestingly, the teams that finished with ratings in the 800s; Kestrels, Slow Handz, and DRN only had 1 game between the three of them, but had a similar enough +/- with their competition which led them to be ranked closely together. Buddy Boat is knocking at their heels, with Monsters following closely behind. Finally, huck buddies brings up the rear with a few close games but ultimately, finished 0-5. Notably, they had a universe point loss to DRN who finished 377 points above them. If they had beat DRN, I imagine huck buddies would be much closer or above Monsters. The beauty of our ranking is more games is more data points, which will finesse our ranking. Keep in mind that there is a decay aspect to ratings, and old results will matter less and less over time.
Story time!
Tiffany & Kelvin, played in BOTH timeslots, 10 4v4 games or 8 hours of straight Ultimate, while Sabrina played in one and helped SharkBait with running the tournament in the second. Wow!!
