Tournament Wrap-Up: The Hammer

Tournament Wrap-Up: The Hammer

It’s Hammer Time!

Our Hamilton tournament had to be rescheduled, but even with the change of date AND being the week right after O4UC, teams were still ready to play.

Unicorn Hunters had a strong start to the day, with a 15-14 win over SGS. Unfortunately, the rest of the day didn’t quite go their way on the scoreboard, but they still managed to play hard and exemplified Spirit of the Game. They may not have come first place in the standings, but Unicorn Hunters walked away tied in first for spirit with Perturbed Pachyderms.

After finishing a couple of spots shy of a bid to Nationals, Perturbed Pachyderms bounced back strong, not only with spirit but on the score sheet as well. They almost went undefeated, with just a 15-10 loss to Tune Squad tarnishing their near-perfect record. Perturbed Pachyderms’ efforts saw them climb 7 spots in the Ontario 4v4 Circuit standings, and they ended a great year with a 7th overall finish!

Tune Squad, our tournament champions, had a flawless run at this event, going 5-0 and taking home first place. They were dominant on the field, winning several games with a significant margin. Near the end of the day, they had to dig deep to keep their record intact and managed to hold out with a 13-12 victory to end the day against SGS.

SGS had a number of close games at O4UC, and we saw an almost brand-new roster of males hit the field for them this weekend. Even with the adjustment, the close games continued to haunt SGS, who ended the day with one win and four losses (three were 1-point games, and the fourth was a 2-point game). Sooner or later, SGS will be able to come out of those close games on the other side.

Melt also sported a 1-4 record at the tournament, falling victim to two 1-point losses. One of those losses came at the hands of SGS, but Melt gets the last laugh, as they ended the Ontario 4v4 Circuit just one point ahead of SGS. Their performance at this event may have also been impacted by their exceptional performance the week before, where they finished 7th at O4UC and earned a bid to Nationals.

Puffins dropped the first two games, but they were able to pull themselves together and end on a positive note. They went on to win big their third game and capped off the day with back to back 1-point victories. Their efforts were rewarded, and they were able to hold their 8th place finish in the Ontario 4v4 Circuit.

FAQ

We beat team ‘X’ at the tournament, but we placed lower than them. Why?2019-01-20T20:59:51-05:00

Think of your relative ranking to other teams like you would the over-under in betting on say, American football. If you are a very high ranked team, and you lose to a very low ranked team, that will likely greatly improve their overall ranking, and may lower yours. Overall, as more and more games are played across the Circuit, these predictions get more and more accurate – and failing to meet them will have less of an impact on a single match up versus the overall data in a season.

Why did my team move up/down when we didn’t even play?2019-01-20T20:56:20-05:00

Even though your team didn’t play, other teams who you have a history with, may have played games more recently. As this is a relative index, if they did well, and you fared well against them, you may also rise. Similarly, if they went down, you may be dragged down with them. The only sure way to control your own destiny is to play and improve on your past results.
